I ran across this tech article today. Check out this snippet:
MESA, Ariz. — A former Arizona school district employee is accused of using school computers in an experiment to find space aliens, costing the worker his job and the district more than $1 million.
Yes you read that right... $1 million! Apparently, he was using a program called SETI to find space aliens. This software is described on their home page as:
What is SETI@home?
SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.
Where is the cost of the $1 million you ask? Bandwidth? Software piracy? No and No, the Superintendent of the school is quoted as saying:
It will take more than $1 million to fix the problem, including removal of the SETI software.
Software removal for $1 million dollars? I'm in the wrong field of work! I tell you what, you can pay me 1/5 of that and I'll come do it :)
