Geek Pride Day: Celebration!

In celebration of Geek Pride Day I decided to put together today's post on the 5 Geekiest things on the internet. This one will be highly opinionated, so if you have some geeky things to share, please comment below! For those of you that don't know; there are multiple types of Geek. I thought about taking a stab at listing all the types of geeks out there: Gaming geeks, Anime Geeks, Tech Geeks, etc etc. I think this image sums it up pretty damn good:

Source

Anyway, I think the best way to cover this celebration would be to find one thing in each of our wonderful categories that will best display it's geekiness. Tell me how I do in each of these categories: Anime, MMO, Tech, Gaming, Funny and Movies.

First up is Movies. This is a famous "70 minute Movie Review" by RedLetterMedia. Not only is it funny, but it covers a controversial movie for us geeks. That's Episode 1: Phantom Menace. Enjoy (I compiled it for your guys):

Next up is the Funny category. What geek doesn't love fail videos? I mean seriously? Watching people fail is what gives us geeks pleasure in life. Here's a compilation (playlist) of a giant pot of fail!

Rounding the next corner is the Anime category. This will be a difficult one, because Anime geeks are hard to please with their Sub vs Dub arguments, etc etc. :) I think the best way to represent Anime geeks is with Cosplay. Enjoy:

Coming up next is our loving and head shooting friends ... The Gaming geeks! When it comes to Gaming geeks one thing sets us apart, and that's gameplay footage. With the recent Halo: Reach Beta reaching 2.7 Million gamers; I think it's clear what gameplay footage we need to focus on today.

Top 10 Kills

They are keeping this server running, so we can't forget about the Tech geeks. The Tech geeks and their Linux/Apple vs Microsoft arguments is going to make this another hard category to satisfy. I think this comic will serve it best:

Continues here...

At last but certainly not least we have what's gathering all the people around the world; the MMO category. This is probably the hardest category to fill. Why you ask? Because none of us MMO players can stick with just one MMO, nor can we agree on what movie, book, game, or meme should have an MMO based on it next. WoW is still the biggest from what I've seen from the numbers, so I think it only fitting to serve up "The Blind". In my opinion this is the best WoW/MMO video ever made. I hope you enjoy.

Well that's it for my Geek Pride Day celebration. If you have anything to add, please post below. If you like our content then please subscribe, follow us on twitter, like us on facebook, or just check back often for new content.

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou

I have come to fall in love with this anime: "Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou". The show is a fantastic display of anime. It's early on in it's development, but I feel it's going to go a long way. The CrunchyRoll description of the show is:

Ichiban Ushiro no Daimao follows Akuto Sai as the lead character, who on the day he enters Constant Magic Academy, receives a very unexpected future occupation aptitude test result: “Devil King.” Weekly serials feature a circle of magical and fantastic characters around Sai vying for his attention and a broad spectrum story that details his destiny of becoming the Devil King.

Basically, he's mistaken as the ruler of all that is evil. Hilarious misunderstanding and events happen in a magical world. It has it's comedic times, it's action time, and most importantly a good story.

When fan subs go bad!

I ran across this blog while browsing my Google Reader and had such a great laugh, I couldn't help but share. The article is titled "fansub failure: when things don’t go according to keikaku [technabob]" and provides pictures of Fan Subbing gone wrong.

What is Fan Subbing you ask?

According to Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fansub

Fansubs originated during the explosion of anime production during the 1980s in Japan. Relatively few titles were licensed for distribution outside of Japan. This made it difficult for anime fans to obtain new titles. Some fans, generally those with some Japanese language experience, began producing amateur subtitled copies of new anime programs so that they could share them with their fellow fans who did not understand Japanese.

A lot of times you will find huge and hilarious mistakes and thanks to technabob.com we can now see a collection of them. Go check it out!

Man marries pillow

I actually saw this story last week, but have been so busy ... I haven't been able to cover it. Apparently in South Korea a man has married his pillow according to the Associated Content.

The article states:

According to the Toronto Sun, the man married a body pillow with a life-size drawing of Fate Testarossa, an anime character. An underground trend has developed of men and boys having relationships with anime body pillows. I suppose that spending eight hours a day on a pillow could cause someone to become emotionally attached, especially if the pillow is a lifelike representation of the anime character.

For those of you that don't know who "Fate Testarossa" (Heh I love plugging LMGTFY) is, let me give you a little background. According to her Wiki Page:

Also known as Fate T. Harlaown (フェイト・T・ハラオウン Feito T Haraoun?) in A's epilogue and StrikerS, is a fictional character in the anime series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. She is voiced by Nana Mizuki.

In the first season, Fate is a mage from the Garden of Time, who is sent to collect Jewel Seeds, which puts her at odds with rival Nanoha Takamachi. She is aided on her quest by an animal familiar, a mature dog-woman named Arf, and is at constant odds against her rival Nanoha Takamachi. In the second and third season she works as a TSA officer.

According to the Sankaku Complex there are pictures and more on the story. Quoting:

This of course comes not so long after a man married his DS/Nene, and some time after an otaku petition for the right to wed 2D characters.
Although not an issue ever likely to be taken seriously when dealing with printed cotton sheets, once simulated virtual partners and companion robots become commonplace the matter might become rather more pressing.

This isn't the first time I've heard of the petition to marry 2D characters. Check it out here. Check out this link for more pictures of the Korean spending time with his married pillow.

Do you guys think it should be right to be able to marry 2D characters or inanimate objects?

Dante's wife sells her soul for his absolution. Unfortunately, for Satan ... That won't fly with Dante and you start out on an epic journey to save her. Here's the E3 trailer to the game:

The movie is an animated action movie. IGN has taken time to review the movie, so stop by there and take a few minutes to read it before picking it up. Here's the official movie trailer:

From what I've played of Dante's Inferno (Only the demo right now), this movie plays right along with the game. If you don't want any spoilers, then don't watch the movie prior to the game's ending. I have seen parts of the movie and suggest that everyone pick it up.

What do you guys think?

Studio Ghibli is doing it again

Studio Ghibli has announced another new film. The film will be named "Karigurashi no Arrietty", and is created after the famous Mary Norton novel, "The Borrowers". The official site for the film is located here , and is of course in Japanese... but can be browsed. Online Ghibli which is a great resource for Studio Ghibli states:

Studio Ghibli has officially announced the next featured film titled Karigurashi no Arrietty, a children's story based on the novel The Borrowers by British author Mary Norton. The movie will be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. "Arrieety's Song", the theme song accompanying the new movie is sang by Cecile Corbel and wil be released on Dec. 19th. Toho will distribute the movie.

I've always enjoyed the Ghibli made movies. I'm sure this one will not dissapoint.

For those that don't know anything about the anime, here's some information for you. According to the Wiki article on the Manga:

The series follows Dr. Kenzo Tenma (天馬 賢三 Tenma Kenzō?) as he pursues a young psychopath/sociopath named Johan, whose life Tenma once saved. The story rapidly progresses through a number of locations: it starts in Düsseldorf, Germany, passes through Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Wiesbaden, cities in the Czech Republic such as Prague, and other cities and villages.

Both the anime and the manga begin with a passage from The Revelation of St. John the Divine, Chapter 13: Verses 1 & 4

And I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads, the names of blasphemy. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

The quote is often interpreted as the coming of the Antichrist. This quote is used because of the many parallels and comparisons between one of the main characters of Monster (Johan) and two candidates of the Antichrist as predicted by Nostradamus.
The text on the cover of the first volume reads as follows:

"Düsseldorf, West Germany in 1986. One day, Dr. Kenzo Tenma ignored his boss's order and executed humanitarian rescue of a man's child. That's how this horrible story begins!!"

Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a young Japanese doctor working at the Eisler Memorial Hospital in Düsseldorf during the 80s. A highly accomplished brain surgeon, he appears to have everything on his plate: a promotion in the offing; the favor of the director of the hospital, Heinemann; and Heinemann's daughter, Eva, as his fiancée. However, Tenma grows increasingly dissatisfied with the political bias of the hospital for treating patients, and seizes his chance to change things after a strange massacre brings the twins Johan and Anna Liebert into his hospital. Johan has a gunshot wound to the head and Anna keeps muttering about killing, and Tenma decides to operate on Johan instead of the mayor of Düsseldorf, who arrived afterwards. Johan is saved, but the politician dies. Tenma loses all his social standing and Eva as a consequence. However, Heinemann and other doctors in Tenma's way are mysteriously murdered, and both children disappear from the hospital soon after. The police suspect Tenma, as he benefits greatly from this turn of events, but they have no evidence, and so can do no more than question him.
At this point, the story advances to nine years later. Tenma is now the Chief of Surgery at Eisler Memorial Hospital. However, he is about to come face to face with a sociopath - a sociopath that he helped save.

A known criminal is found on the street, hit by a car. He comes under the care of Dr. Tenma, who observes him muttering about a "Monster". Tenma extends kindness to that criminal, and thus the criminal begins to open up for Tenma. Then one evening when Dr. Tenma comes back with a clock as a gift for the criminal, he finds the guard in front of the criminal's room dead, and the criminal himself gone.

Following his trail to the construction site of a half finished building near the hospital, he finds the man. The man, who has developed a sort of doctor-patient friendship with Dr. Tenma, warns him against coming closer, and pleads with him to run away. Tenma refuses, however, and the identity of the man holding the gun pointed at the criminal in the abandoned parking garage is revealed to be the boy whose life Tenma had saved nine years ago - Johan Liebert. Despite Dr. Tenma's attempt to reason with him, Johan shoots the criminal, tells Tenma that he could never kill the man who had saved his life, and then walks off into the night while Tenma is still too shocked to stop him. After this incident, Tenma is again suspected by the police, particularly Inspector Runge, and he tries to find more information about this 'Johan'. He soon discovers that the boy's sister, now named Nina, happily living the life of an adopted daughter to two caring parents, and the only trace of her terrible past are few dreams she has had. Tenma discovers her on her birthday, and manages to prevent her from meeting her brother, but comes too late to prevent Johan from murdering her foster parents. As the show progresses, Tenma learns of the origins of this monster, from the former East Germany's attempt to use a secret orphanage called Kinderheim 511 (where Johan came from) in order to create the "perfect soldiers" through "psychological reprogramming", to the author of a children's book which was used in a eugenics experiment in Czech Republic. He also learns about the scope of the atrocities this "Monster" has committed, and he vows to fix the mistake he made when he saved Johan's life.

While Tenma is the main character of Monster, the story also focuses heavily on those surrounding his search for Johan, such as Inspector Runge (who is investigating Johan's various murders but pins them all on Tenma) and Nina Fortner (aka Anna Liebert, Johan's twin sister), and a host of other characters, minor and major, whose lives have been shaped by the deeds of the monster named 'Johan'.

The Destructoid review uses words like "strangely aroused" to state that they are interested to see more. I'm not sure. My question is: Are they trying to milk the Halo series to death like they have Michael Jackson? I mean, seriously.

For those that haven't seen it, here's the first episode of Halo Legends:
