Super Mario Bros. Crossover

I ran across this video today:

What is it?

Super Mario Bros Crossover is a flash game that recreates the original Super Mario Bros for Nintendo and allows you to play it as characters from other classic Nintendo games. It is a tribute to classic NES games and anyone that grew up playing Nintendo should enjoy it. Click on the image above to play it.

That looked like soooo much fun, that I wanted to check it out. The original can be found at Exploding Rabbit, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to embed it here for you guys and gals to play :)

Only question I have is ... Where are the instructions to build this in my house!?

Monster Hunter Tri: Reviews

We've all seen the Wii commercials for Monster Hunter Tri. Ever wondered if it holds up to the standard it seems to set? Today's the day to find out. Here are 5 video reviews that should let you know whether it's a buy, rent or avoid.

Zero Punctuation: (If Embed doesn't work, go here)

IGN:

Gamespot gameplay video. Text review here.

Have you tried Monster Hunter Tri? What did you think? Let us all know in the comments below.

From what the reviews sound ... Sounds like I might pick this one up, but wait till it hits the 20 or 30 dollar mark.

Geek Pride Day: Celebration!

In celebration of Geek Pride Day I decided to put together today's post on the 5 Geekiest things on the internet. This one will be highly opinionated, so if you have some geeky things to share, please comment below! For those of you that don't know; there are multiple types of Geek. I thought about taking a stab at listing all the types of geeks out there: Gaming geeks, Anime Geeks, Tech Geeks, etc etc. I think this image sums it up pretty damn good:

Source

Anyway, I think the best way to cover this celebration would be to find one thing in each of our wonderful categories that will best display it's geekiness. Tell me how I do in each of these categories: Anime, MMO, Tech, Gaming, Funny and Movies.

First up is Movies. This is a famous "70 minute Movie Review" by RedLetterMedia. Not only is it funny, but it covers a controversial movie for us geeks. That's Episode 1: Phantom Menace. Enjoy (I compiled it for your guys):

Next up is the Funny category. What geek doesn't love fail videos? I mean seriously? Watching people fail is what gives us geeks pleasure in life. Here's a compilation (playlist) of a giant pot of fail!

Rounding the next corner is the Anime category. This will be a difficult one, because Anime geeks are hard to please with their Sub vs Dub arguments, etc etc. :) I think the best way to represent Anime geeks is with Cosplay. Enjoy:

Coming up next is our loving and head shooting friends ... The Gaming geeks! When it comes to Gaming geeks one thing sets us apart, and that's gameplay footage. With the recent Halo: Reach Beta reaching 2.7 Million gamers; I think it's clear what gameplay footage we need to focus on today.

Top 10 Kills

They are keeping this server running, so we can't forget about the Tech geeks. The Tech geeks and their Linux/Apple vs Microsoft arguments is going to make this another hard category to satisfy. I think this comic will serve it best:

Continues here...

At last but certainly not least we have what's gathering all the people around the world; the MMO category. This is probably the hardest category to fill. Why you ask? Because none of us MMO players can stick with just one MMO, nor can we agree on what movie, book, game, or meme should have an MMO based on it next. WoW is still the biggest from what I've seen from the numbers, so I think it only fitting to serve up "The Blind". In my opinion this is the best WoW/MMO video ever made. I hope you enjoy.

Well that's it for my Geek Pride Day celebration. If you have anything to add, please post below. If you like our content then please subscribe, follow us on twitter, like us on facebook, or just check back often for new content.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Halo: Reach top 10 kills

With all the media on Halo: Reach out this week and my addiction to it ... I've been unable to put together my own review and videos yet for you guys. Instead here's a video that was posted on Bungie.net a few hours ago. It's a video that shows the top 10 recorded kills.

Enjoy!

Are you guys playing Reach? What do you think of it? I've been playing a good bit. Hit me up if you ever want to play at night with my Gamertag: crimmFTW. I look forward to seeing you guys on the battlefield. I'll have more Reach as soon as I can!

Battle.NET and Facebook

Blizzard made this announcement yesterday:

IRVINE, Calif. – May 5, 2010 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that its Battle.net® gaming service will integrate with Facebook®, linking the world's premier online gaming platform with the world's most popular social platform. The first step in the integration will enable StarCraft® II: Wings of Liberty™ players to quickly add Blizzard gamers who are friends on Facebook to their Battle.net friend lists, facilitating their social gaming experience on the service.

"We're pleased to be working with Facebook to integrate their platform with Battle.net to enhance the social-entertainment experience for our players," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "This new functionality will make it easier than ever to connect with friends on Battle.net and play StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games together."

The new Facebook functionality in Battle.net will be tested in the near future via the ongoing StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta test and will be available to all StarCraft II players when the game ships later this year. Information about other Facebook-related features on Battle.net will be announced at a later date.

I see this being a good idea and a bad idea. Firstly, I have enough spam with Farmville and whateverville is out there. Secondly, I get enough crap from my friends and family about what games I'm currently playing and that I play them too much. Well, you know that it will post to your wall that you are playing WoW, Starcraft, etc.

I see it being a good idea on the other hand though, because people that you may not have thought are Starcraft/WoW players ... Really are hardcore fans. It'll be easier to find a game with friends and family. The downside to that is I don't involve my facebook friends with gaming... Only my twitter friends are my gaming friends.

We'll see. I'll definitely at least give it a try.

What do you guys think? Will you try it?

Breach

@Xenoliath tweeted this video of a special ops created game called Breach by atomic games. The official website is located here: http://breachgame.com/. Here's the official description:

Raleigh, North Carolina – March 26, 2010
Atomic Games, a developer of simulations for US military and intelligence agencies and a pioneer in military action games, announced Breach™ today. Breach is a first-person multiplayer shooter that literally blows the floor out from under conventional military shooters. Breach introduces new kinds of destruction that haven’t been seen in any other game, unveils an Active Cover System which allows players to take advantage of any cover as it is ripped apart, and adds in unique, true-to-life spy gadgets which all changes the very nature of multiplayer combat.

Breach uses Atomic’s innovative Hydrogen™ Engine to give players inventive ways to use destruction so they can stun, manipulate, and eliminate their opponents with a new toolbox of tactics. For the first time, virtual warriors can punch holes through floors to get the drop on enemies below, breach both interior and exterior walls, crush enemy fighters by collapsing ceilings and balconies, and even shoot away individual bricks to create “shooter’s holes.” Breach is the first game to mix Atomic’s ground-breaking Active Cover System, which lets players attach instantly to cover, quickly pop in and out of cover, and peak and blind-fire from behind cover, with an environment in which virtually anything that can be used for cover can also be destroyed. As walls get eaten away from bullets and explosions, characters will be able to use the new openings to return fire without leaving the protection of remaining cover.

Players will take on the roles of some of the most elite field operatives in the US. CIA Special Activities Division officers are the teams sent in on real-life black operations when no one can ever know the US was involved. Atomic is using expertise it developed creating training systems for the world’s leading military and intelligence organizations to bring the secret world of black operations to life with accurate weapons, gear, and real-life spy gadgets which virtual operators can use with real world tactics to defeat the enemy.

Breach also aims to disrupt the way video games are priced and purchased. Breach can be downloaded through the Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. On this platform, Breach offers the kinds of innovation and features expected in a full packaged game.

Breach will be available this Summer and it does not yet have a rating by the ESRB.

It will be available via Xbox Live Arcade for 15 bucks!! Check out this video:

Crysis 2

The game that was used to benchmark gaming machines around the world is BACK with a sequel! Official game page: http://www.ea.com/games/crysis-2

Game Info
The world has been ravaged by a series of climatic disasters and society is on the verge of total breakdown. Now the aliens have returned, with a full invasion force bent on nothing less than the total annihilation of mankind, starting by trying to rip the heart out of Earth's most iconic city.

In New York, terrifying alien invaders stalk the streets and a nightmare plague strikes down the city's myriad inhabitants with brutal epidemic speed. The city's systems are in chaos, its streets and skyline are smashed and in flaming ruin. This is New York City like you've never seen it before.

Neither paramilitary law enforcement nor the might of the US military machine can stand against the invaders, and all who choose not to flee are dead men walking. Just to survive in this maelstrom of death will require technology beyond anything any modern soldier has ever seen.

One man will inherit that means to survive. One supersoldier, wielding the combat enhancement technology of the future with Nanosuit 2, will make the last stand to save humanity from destruction in the urban jungle that is New York City.

Incredible Kill Streak in MW 2

WOW is all I can say.

Game Review - Toy Soldiers

Today I review: Toy Soldiers for the Xbox Live Arcade. *NOTE* Annotations have to be own to be able to click and see the gameplay video. I'm just linking another Youtuber to share the love :)

Rapely

SXEPhil is talking about this, Kotaku is talking about this .... Let's talk about this. The game is a game where you get to rape someone. Yes, that's right. Rape. To quote Kotaku:

To bring everyone up to speed, Rapelay allows the player to have his way with the game's three female characters. The title is out of print and after the game started to get flak, Illusion, the company that created Rapelay, pulled the title from its website.

Now in the game maker's defense they didn't break any laws. The made the game for Japanese in Japan, and not focusing on the world market. To again quote Kotaku the companies (Illusion) spokesperson states:

"We are simply bewildered by the move," said Illusion spokesman Makoto Nakaoka. "We make the games for the domestic market and abide by laws here.

In my opinion, this is distasteful in whatever country you sell it in. The argument of sex crime is cropping up in this discussion as well. Whether this game or other erotic games like it cause a rise in sex crimes, and along with that ... a rape chart is floating around. Check this out:

UN Rape Rates per 100,000

Canada: 78.08
Australia: 77.79
USA: 32.05
Sweden: 24.47
UK: 16.23
France: 14.36
S. Korea: 12.98
Germany: 9.12
Russia: 4.78
Taiwan: 4.08
Japan: 1.78

So statistically they win that argument, but in my opinion they aren't comparing apples with apples. What do I mean by that? Let me explain. Japanese culture has a much looser concept of sexual misconduct than most other countries. I would present you with references on that statement, but unfortunately doing a Google search for Japanese and any reference to sex presents links I won't give to you guys.

What do you guys think? The game has been out since 2006, but this is hitting CNN which is giving it steam. Also, according to Kotaku the game has been ceased:

While these game makers broke no Japanese laws, the country's Ethics Organization of Computer Software held an emergency meeting in June 2009 in which nearly 100 representatives from various erotic game companies concluded that the manufacturer and sale of rape-type games should cease. This was not a government decision or even a legal one, but instead a self-policing policy on the part of the EOCS.

The link back to CNN is located here. I want to hear your opinions. Do you think it's right that they were forced to stop the game? Do you think that they should be ashamed of creating something like this?

Embed CNN video (Not safe for work)

Did you hear that? 38 more games like this. Also, back to the rape count chart. Just think... That's REPORTED rape. I wonder how much that Canadian number would go up if they were all reported.

PS3 3.21 Firmware update - No linux.

According to the Playstation blog the latest firmware update is coming to the PS3 on April 1st 2010. We'll discuss the full firmware update shortly, but first I want to point this out:

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

For those of you that are sitting there saying ... Wait, what? I could install Linux on my PS3?! Let's check out the Wiki page for this topic. According to the Wiki page:

Soon after the PlayStation 3 launched, Sony released "Other OS" in a PlayStation 3 System Software firmware up-date that allowed booting into Linux from the hard drive or from a Live CD that the distributor's kernel would boot making it possible to run on the PlayStation 3.

I have never tried this personally, but quick... Stop reading for a minute and go try it!! What are you waiting for ... Go with your Geekyness! :)

Okay back? Cool, huh? Let's go over the rest of the update. The official patch page isn't ready yet, so let's continue to exam the blog. According to the blog, you can choose not to do the update if you want to continue using your linux support, but you will lose access to:

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat

  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later

  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)

  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
That's a pretty big incentive. Those of you out there that may use the OtherOS feature, what do you use it for? Is it worth losing the above? That looks like it. We'll have to continue to watch the official patch page for the official patch notes. You can follow it here: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm
